DFR 2024 other photos

I don't usually post photos here that I didn't take but this trip there were so many good photos from other people, selfies (Tim) and drone shots (Aaron and Tim), and shots of me. Thanks guys.

Dragon Slayer, I think this is an Iphone pano shot.
Lynch KY on the Dragon Slayer.

A favorite place to stop, a small church on Pine Creek Road.
This isn't actually a drone shot but taken from the top of Big Walker Mtn lookout fire tower. We all chipped in and paid Tim to climb to the top of the tower.
Time for an after lunch nap.

Stop on the Dragon Slayer in KY. This was a new road for us but one we'll visit again, it was a blast.

The old train station in Lynch KY on the northern end of the Dragon Slayer.

Various group photos at the bottom on Fontana Dam.

It is called Fall Dragon Run, lots of falling leaves which need to be cleaned out of the grill at some point.

Most of my dragon trips end with one last trip over the Foothills Parkway on my way home.

DFR 2024

As usual for the last couple of years, we started our Dragon Fall Run early hitting fun roads in several states from WV down to NC.

Big Walker Mtn lookout, one of our favorite places to stop on 52 north of Wytheville VA. This county store has some of the best ice cream ever, the apple cinnamon is amazing.

Two of my favorite s2k friends, maryland Tim ...

... and bama Dave.

At one of our usual mountain top breaks I got bored and started shooting the birds flying over.

Most of our favorites roads look somewhat like this.
A quick discussion on our favorite driving positions??

Rocky Mountaineer - Colorado River trip

While in Moab we took a calm water boat trip on the Colorado River, no rapids and such, just cruising down the river enjoying the scenery.

We put in just downstream from Moab and went almost to the start of Canyonlands. You are not allowed past the point without a river permit, that is where the river starts to get wild.

We stopped several places along the river including Thelma & Louise point where they filmed the last scene of the movie.

At one point we stopped for a short hike up the canyon wall to see petrified wood and other interesting things.

On our way back up river we passed several groups of rafts heading downriver to run the river thru Canyon Lands national park.

Rocky Mountaineer - Glenwood Springs to Denver

Deer along the Colorado River.
An Osprey we spotted in a tree, if you look close he has his lunch in his talons.

Once we got out of the mountains and back into the foothills near Denver the deer got bigger or maybe we could just see them easier.

Rocky Mountaineer - Moab to Glenwood Springs

After two days in Moab we board the train again and head north to near I-40 then head east back toward Glenwood Springs and Denver.

Pronghorn Antelope - we saw quite a few of these but they were either eating grass or just standing there. Whenever you see video of them they are always running but we never saw that.

Mountain bikers across the canyon in Moab, this looked like a blast but I don't think I could handle the hills, lots of and up down.

Because we leave Moab around lunch time we get into Glenwood Springs after dark. We got to see a beautiful and ever changing sunset on the way.

Boarding the train our last day in Glenwood Springs.

Our train conductor and his favorite hat. One his last trip west he was in one of the open vestibules between cars and a gust of wind blew his hat off. On the way back east the train slowed near where it happened so everyone to look and someone spotted his hat in the grass and he was able to get it back.

We saw several bald eagles from the train but I got very few good photos. Since the train is always moving you had to be quick to get a good shot.
