Badlands National Park

From Roosevelt we headed south into South Dakota. Our first stop was Badlands National Park. We've been there a couple of times on previous trips so we decided to skip the hikes and just take a casual drive through the park, take some photos then head to Wind Caves National Park, somewhere we'd never been before.

Pinnacles entrance station. You can't see them in this photo but off to the right quite a ways from the road was a herd of Bison. In the past we've not seen much wildlife here, mostly we visit for the scenery.

Badlands has amazing views.

It was a beautiful day for driving top down and enjoying the sunshine.

It turned out the scenery wasn't the highlight this time, we came across a big horn sheep just 10 feet from the road. I've seen and photographed big horns on previous trips but always from a long long way away, just a tiny dot of the photo you have to blow up. This was the closest we've been to one.

As excited as I was about the first big horn sheep just a little further down the road we found came across a ewe with her lamb just 100 feet off the road.

From Badlands we went west to our next stop, Wind Caves National Park.
