From Wind Cave we headed back to where we were staying in Rapid City SD. We took the scenic route thru Custer State Park.
Taking the wildlife loop we first spotted Prairie Dogs.
We did see some bison but none near the road. These are wild burros although I not sure you can call them wild.
People were petting and feeding them so not so wild.
My favorite were this Jenny (mother burro, yes I had to look that up) and her foal.
Next we spotted some Pronghorn Antelope. I've seen pronghorns multiple times on other trips. When you see them on video, tv shows and such they always show them running. They are the fastest land mammal in the americas and are beautiful when they are running.
I've never seen them run, I've seen them sitting the grass, standing in the grass, eating the grass, slowly walking through the grass but never running. It's on my bucket list to someday see them run.
Leaving Custer we took Iron Mountain road, a really beautiful drive up and over the mountain The road has several tunnels including Scovel Johnson Tunnel which lines up perfectly with a view of Mt Rushmore in the distance.
